Downham Market Twinning Club

Wine Tasting November 29th 2019

Our Christmas meeting was the usual wine tasting followed by mince pies, sausage rolls and coffee. However, this year there one person missing. Steve was not able to present the eight wines, four white and four red due to ill health. It fell upon me to do the honours and take his place.

Thirty-two members and guests attended the event. An enjoyable evening sampling a variety of wines from different parts of the world. As the evening progressed the chatting between the wines grew louder.

We started with a white Chardonnay, McGuigan Black Label from Australia followed by two Sauvignon Blancs. One from South Africa, Stellenbosch and the other New Zealand, Mud House. We finished the whites with a Kendermanns Riesling Spatlese from Germany. All the white wines were from 2018.

The reds started with Kumala Reserve Pinotage from South Africa, also from 2018. Next came Vina del Cura Rioja Gran Reserva 2012 from Spain. We finished with two Medoc wines. The first Chateau Fontaine de L’Aubier 2016, followed by Chateau Grand Marceuax 2009.

Throughout the tasting marks I recorded a mark out of ten against each wine. Graham Russell received a bottle of Cava for having scored in total the same as myself.

The evening finished with drawing the raffle and the monthly draw club for November and December.

Thank you to all who donated raffle prizes and to all who helped and supported me throughout the evening in the absence of Steve.
