Downham Market Twinning Club

40th Anniversary Celebration trip to Civray

We eagerly awaited the aeroplane at Stansted Airport, having travelled by coach from Downham Market last Friday, (September 30th). Not all of us have been involved with the Twinning Club since 1976 but there were some travelling who had. We were collected at Poitiers Airport by our hosts and went to the Town Hall at Civray to receive our welcome packs and of course to partake in a glass of wine. That evening was spent with our hosts and on Saturday morning we travelled to the museum ‘Le Vieux Cormenier’ which was an audio visual experience about the history of the countryside and its people, and it was excellent. For lunch we travelled to ‘La Vallèe Des Singes’ (Vallee of the Monkeys) and in the afternoon there was time to visit the attraction itself, we’ve been before but it has developed quite a bit since then. Saturday Evening was spent with hosts.

Many years ago, our club donated a red telephone box to Civray, which was in use until recent years. Vandalism has taken its toll and the Civray Council decided to remove it and invited the local College to refurbish it. Then students were given free range and have done an excellent job. The box has been placed

close to the Town Centre and surrounded by a flower garden, it is not however a working piece of equipment!

On Sunday morning we all gathered at the telephone box for a formal dedication from Monsieur Gilbert Jaladeau. Local Schools provided a choir to since both national anthems. A drink was followed by lunch at a new venue, close to the Camping Site.

Sunday evening was the Formal celebration of the anniversary, a dinner was held at the Town Hall, speeches were made and gifts exchanged. Rather than a Dance, a cabaret was held and was most entertaining. Attendance at the event was very good indeed, with many French Councillors and dignitaries attending. A marvellous evening from beginning to end.

Monday came too soon but there was still time for a lunch at the Town Hall before the time arrived to depart for the airport.

Our French friends will be visiting us in July/August 2017 and we really can’t wait to see them all again.
