Downham Market Twinning Club

Visit to Civray July/August 2018

We left Downham Market by coach at 9.00 on Monday morning, travelling to Stansted airport for our flight to Poitiers, where we collected by a French coach for the journey to Civray. At the Town Hall guests were introduced to their hosts and after a glass of wine travelled to their homes for dinner and a well-earned sleep.

On Tuesday morning we assembled at the Town Hall for an excellent breakfast and a reception hosted by the Mayor. There followed free time to meander around the market. At lunchtime we travelled to the village of Asnois where we enjoyed a picnic, followed by games such as Boules and mölky. In the evening another meal was held at the same venue.

Wednesday was a full day out, at Ligugé travelling in our host’s cars. We visited Ligugé Abbey and the calligraphy school which was most interesting, members who wished could try their calligraphy skills. Lunch was taken at the Le Bistrot des Saveurs and this was followed by a visit to the La Brasserie des Pirates Brewery.

On Thursday we travelled to Brantôme near Pèrigueux, A very peaceful river cruise on an electric boat was enjoyed followed by a visit to the Potters market and then lunch in a riverside restaurant. In the afternoon we visited the Chateau be Bourdeilles and returned for dinner with our hosts.

We left Civray by coach on Friday to visit Chauvigny. A spectacular display by the Birds of the World Giants of the Sky’ was magnificent. We found our own lunch and then visited the Donjon de Gouzon museum. In the evening we went to dinner at the daughter of our host.

The busy week continued on Saturday with a visit to a snail farm at Mimaudié near to Blanzay with a tasting if required, (no thanks).

Another picnic took place in the local woods followed by a visit to a goat farm at

Chez Chaveau. Cheese is the product here. In the evening the Dinner was held at a new venue, La Rece in Civray. Music was supplied and dancing took place.

Sunday was free with hosts, we had Claude and Marinette Fayoux come to an excellent lunch.

On Monday we travelled back to Poitiers and by plane back to Stansted, again an excellent time had been enjoyed. The weather had been very hot indeed, even the French were suffering. Can’t wait to greet our French ‘amis’ next year.
